The book Św. Aniela Merici i jej dzieło realizowane przez polskie Urszulanki Unii Rzymskiej (St. Angela Merici and her work, carried out by the Polish Ursulines of the Roman Union) is the sixth volume in the series Duchowość klasztorów polskich: przekaz i komunikacja (The Spirituality of Polish Religious Communities: The Message and the Contribution). This series shows the role that Christian spirituality had in the past and has in the present and the opportunity it will have in the future.
The work of the Ursulines of the Roman Union is an example and testifies to how a very deep interior life can prove to be a source of inspiration and a driving force for the many activities of formation, to the benefit of individuals and of society. It could be said that this path originated far away with St. Angela Merici, but still more important is the fact that that this beginning springs directly from her deep communion with God. Moreover, analyzing the testimony of those who knew her, we can say: it comes from her mystical life.
The book Św. Aniela Merici i jej dzieło realizowane przez polskie Urszulanki Unii Rzymskiej (Saint Angela Merici and her work, carried out by the Polish Ursulines of the Roman Union) is a joint work of the research team of the International Study Centre S. Angela–S. Ursula, of the Merician Centre, of the Papal University of John Paul II in Cracow, of the Faculty of Social Sciences, of the Institute of Journalism and Social Communication, of the Chair of Spirituality in Media and Social Relationships, of the Theology Faculty, and of people in settings linked with Ursulines in Italy and in Poland.
From the perspective of Christian spirituality, the contributions of this book’s writers show some fields and ways whereby the Merician spirit inspires, fulfils, purifies, builds, improves, enhances, and is nourished by spirituality and charts a path. It is about the convergence of faith and human values (which is not always easy from a human point of view but becomes very fruitful): its pedagogy comes from that convergence; it seems obvious, but, at the same time, it is an amazing proposition of love, witnessed in St. Angela’s time and still seen today (Prof. Giampietro Belotti).
We can better understand St. Angela’s contribution in the deepening of faith and Christian culture (Prof. Ursula Borgowska, OSU). The theme of the Merician charism and Ursuline spirituality is treated (Prof. Jerzy Wieslaw Gogola, OCD). The saint’s interior life and the way of life she teaches are presented as inspired, formed and nourished by God’s Word (Prof. Wojciech Misztal).
Espousal with Christ and spiritual motherhood are also presented according to Merician spirituality (Dr. Grazyna Weronika Dryl, OSU). One chapter is devoted to the view of the human person and the path to holiness and towards full sanctity (Mons. Prof. Andrzej Siemieniewski). The reader can search out the traces of the Holy Spirit’s work in Angela Merici’s life and works (Prof. Wojciech Zyzak). We can also be guided and inspired by a reflection on training and education according to the Merician spirit and their contributions and present reality (Prof. Janusz Mastalski).
Two final chapters are dedicated to the Merician works of the Ursuline nuns in Poland, particularly in Cracow. Readers are invited, like guests, to cross the convent threshold, to retrace the connections between St. Angela and the community of Ursuline nuns there, getting to know them better through archival research and scientific study (Mgr. Iwona Naglik OSU). A further presentation covers the history of the educational mission of the Ursulines by the nuns’ community in Cracow, that is, the abundance of their works, their development, sometimes their protection, and successes, acknowledged either officially or by their students (Dr. Anna Rogozińska).
