Questa relazione su Maria dell'incarnazione, tenuta in occasione del Convegno CIM 2012, tratta l'argomento inquadrando la vita e la spiritualità della Santa nel contesto storico, letterario-scientifico e teologico-spirituale dei luoghi e del tempo in cui è vissuta: il XVII sec. nella Francia coloniale.

Maria dell'incarnazione è stata aperta agli influssi culturali e religiosi del suo tempo cogliendo, con oculato discernimento, il meglio in essi contenuto. La sua vita è un prototipo per ogni categoria di persone, essendo stata un'autentica cristiana laica, sposa, madre, vedova, manager, mistica, religiosa claustrale, pioniera missionaria, Fondatrice di un nuovo ramo di Orsoline, educatrice, evangelizzatrice ed apostola appassionata, tanto da meritarsi il titolo di Madre della Chiesa Canadese; ed inoltre letterata avendo composto, oltre ai primi catechismi, vocabolari delle lingue indigene delle diverse etnie locali ed ha inviato migliaia di lettere, in Francia, al figlio Claude, alle Orsoline e alle varie autorità  e persone altolocate che , partendo, le avevano promesso aiuti. Queste lettere rappresentano ora un patrimonio molto importante per la cultura canadese perché, in esse, Maria ha descritto nei particolari la vita, i luoghi, gli usi e i costumi degli aborigeni, dei coloni e dei missionari. Morendo, Maria ha lasciato una ricca biblioteca di scritti personali, compresa l'Autobiografia del 1654 richiestale dal figlio Benedettino, ma anche libri di spiritualità  importati dalla Francia che permettono di tracciare il suo profilo spirituale e culturale.
Questo ricco patrimonio è una fonte quasi inesauribile dove studiosi e teologi possono attingere per studi e approfondimenti. A tale scopo da decenni a Québec esiste un "Centro Studi Maria dell'Incarnazione" ed ugualmente a Tours.
Riflettendo sulla figura di questa Santa così poliedrica, degna Figlia di S. Angela, non si può rimanere indifferenti. Viene spontaneo chiedersi e valutare come noi, oggi, siamo inseriti nel nostro tempo e come ci lasciamo influenzare dalle varie correnti di pensiero presenti nella cultura contemporanea.

A woman, a daughter of St. Angela Merici, who fulfilled herself in the historical and spiritual background

This report on Marie of the Incarnation, presented at the Meeting of CIM 2012, deals with this matter, setting the life and the spirituality of the saint in the historical, literary-scientific and theological-spiritual background of the places and times in which she lived: the XVIIth century of colonial France.

Marie of the Incarnation was open to the cultural and religious influence of her times, catching the best in them, with wise judgment. Her life is a model for every kind of person, as she had been a true secular Christian, wife, mother, widow, manager, mystic, cloistered religious, missionary pioneer, foundress of a new branch of the Ursulines, educator, evangelist and enthusiastic apostle - so that she deserved the title of Mother of the Canadian Church - and in addition she was a literary woman, having written, besides the first catechisms, dictionaries of the native languages of the different local ethnic groups. She also sent thousands of letters to France, to her son Claude, to the Ursulines, to the different authorities and high-ranking people who, when she left, had promised her assistance. These letters are now a very important heritage for Canadian culture, as in them, Marie described, in minute details, the life, the places, the costumes and the traditions of the aborigines, the colonists and the missionaries. When she died, she left a rich library of personal written tests, including her Autobiography of 1654, which her son, a Benedictine, had asked her, but also books of spirituality imported from France which allow us to outline her spiritual and cultural personality.
This rich heritage is a nearly endless source from which scholars and theologians can draw inspiration for study and close examinations. For this purpose, in Quebec there is a "Study Centre.of Marie of the Incarnation" and another in Tours.
Thinking about this very multi-faceted saint, a worthy daughter of St. Angela, we cannot be apathetic. It is natural to ask ourselves and think how we, nowadays, are integrated in our time and how we allow ourselves to be affected by the different trends of our contemporary culture.
