Today
The Ursulines of Louisville sponsor Sacred Heart Academy, Sacred Heart Model School, Sacred Heart Preschool, and Sacred Heart School for the Arts and co-sponsor Nativity Academy in Louisville. Individual sisters minister in five states and in Peru.
Additionally, a corporate work of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville is the Angela Merici Center for Spirituality, which offers days of prayer, retreats, personal development workshops, and individual and group spiritual direction.
Women and men closely connected to the Ursulines have the option of becoming members of the Associate Call Program. The associates commit themselves to living the charism of Saint Angela, while living out their Christian vocation in various settings.
History
Three German Ursulines from Straubing, Germany, arrived in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1858, responding to Bishop Martin John Spaulding's need for teachers at St. Martin School. Mother Salesia Reitmeier was at the helm. The sisters opened classes within two weeks for 50 children. A year later they had constructed and opened a convent and a boarding school for girls named Ursuline Academy.
Soon the community had grown in numbers and was asked to operate and staff other schools, including Sacred Heart Academy in 1877. By 1881, 108 sisters had responsibility for twenty schools. Eventually they expanded to serve in 23 other states and in Peru. In 1917, the sisters completed construction of their new motherhouse on what was to become the Ursuline Campus on Lexington Road. Ursuline sisters of Columbia, South Carolina joined the Louisville community in 1938. Ursuline sisters of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania joined them in 1958.
By 1958 the Ursulines of Louisville also owned and operated Ursuline College (which merged with Bellarmine College in 1968 to become Bellarmine University today), Ursuline Academy, Sacred Heart Academy, Sacred Heart Model School, and the Ursuline Speech Clinic.
